What is success?

Talking about success in the voluntary sector can create complex debates.

What does the word even mean?

When considering the ingredients of a recipe for success, there are some key things almost all ‘successful’ programs run by charities and community groups have in common.

Small charities and community groups form the backbone of social support and community development across the UK and elsewhere.

These organizations often operate with limited resources yet manage to create significant positive change within their area of benefit. Often times, they punch above their weight and it is this that Small Change Revolution loves to hear about; we want to hear your story of being a successful activist for change, what you or your group have achieved for your community and much much more.

Storytelling and sharing success are both important parts of the voluntary sector and we need you to join in.

In the third sector, the key to success often lies in the most impactful programs. That is not to say that those programs necessarily cost the most to deliver – they are just the most successful.

But what makes a program successful, and why?

Successful programs in small charities and community groups are vital for several reasons.

Despite limited resources, they:

– demonstrate the potential for positive impact,
– inspire donor confidence,
– serve as models for other organizations.

These programs often:

– address pressing community needs,
– innovate within their constraints,
– leverage local partnerships effectively.

If you have success, you, your group, charity or organisation would like to share – we would love to hear from you!

Top 3 Ingredients in the recipe for success:

Address a pressing need

Identifying, demonstrating and addressing a clear need is something all good causes should be able to do. It is the reason for being.

Innovate

Doing what has always been done simply because that is how it has always been done, ‘Doth butter no parsnips!’. Innovation is crucial.

Innovation means trying something new that has not been tried in this context.

Lots of innovation is inspired from elsewhere.

So, look around and see what works elsewhere and innovate to make that approach fit for the purpose where you are.

Leverage local partnerships

You might feel very alone, trying to do what you are doing, but with a little imagination, it becomes easier to find others willing to help take your efforts to the next level!
