All about Gyr

What is Gyr?

Founded by Anthony Welsh, Gyr is all about connecting homeless people with housing, using a work-based model. Social capital within the local homeless population in Southampton is used to refurbish empty priorities which are then offered to those who are involved in the project.
What we believe

Gyr believes that housing is the best way to solve the problem of homelessness.

Our mission

Our mission is simple to engage, empower, and mobilise individuals in their own solutions to the problems they have by using existing skills, learning new skills and taking pride in the accommodation they are offered.

What we want

We place the lived experience at the heart of everything we do. We want to take our grassroots project to the next level. We want to form a committee to oversee the journey we are taking over the next 5-7 years. We have big aspirations but need help navigating a sustainable course and maybe you could help.

Who we work with

We work with private landlords who want to make their empty properties habitable.

We want to develop strong links with all local stakeholders including other homelessness agencies, local statutory agencies and vocational education providers.

We also want to develop strong relationships with relevant corporate sponsors who might be willing to share some resources, best practice or skills training.

Listening to the experts

With a commitment to inclusiveness and diversity, we actively engage with those who have a ‘lived experience’, recognizing that they are the experts in their lives and communities.

We also work with those who have a wealth of knowledge because of the work they do and we are the first to say we don’t know everything.

We are keen and ready to learn.

Everything starts small

Gyr is about action and doing. We have started our work already but we know that for it to become a model which can be replicated, not just in Southampton but across the country, we need capacity building and support. Maybe you can help with that
